Seal Beach Pad

Our happy little home with our cozy patio & garden

March Meriment

March is always a nice month; the end of winter, the beginning of spring. I took and PASSED my PFT exam on the 3rd. Now I am a certified Personal Fitness Trainer. I have been practicing on Rob. We are doing pretty well with our getting in shape program.
We have been pretty busy playing this month. We have been bike riding and golfing.
We got a phone call from James and he invited us to their home in Long Beach. They are having a joint birthday party for Bella & Vinney. James is my nephew (my brother Eric's son). It was really fun. We got to see James, his wife Sarah, and their three darlling kids, Bella is 8, Sophia is 4 and Vinney is 3. My step-brother Eric and his wife Laura were there from Colorado, my step-brother Chris was there and their dad Bob was also there. I haven't seen them since Whitney got married in 2004. We had fun. Good Mexican food and 2 yummy cakes.
My birthday began a busy week. March 15th I turned 55. I am now officially a "Senior Citizen" I asked Rob how he felt about being married to a "Senior" and he said good, now we get discounts! I started the day with a manicure & pedicure. Then we rode our bikes to Long Beach and went through the aquarium. It was fan. It is a big place. We got to watch the feeding and training of the Seals which was pretty fun. Then we rode our bikes back. We showered and dressed up and went to Huntington Beach for dinner at a place called Duke's. It is right aon the beach at the pier. We had some good sea food. It was a great day. I received happy birthday phone calles from my Mom, my Dad & Barb, my brother, and Anne & the girls. I also received happy birthday wishes from Nancy, my cousin Laurie, and our friend Shelly.
The next day we went on a 45 mile bike ride on the tandum. It was not so fun. It was fun for about 20 miles, but after that...Not So Much! The tandum is not expecially comfortable. It would have been better on two bikes.
The next day was St Patty's day. I always love St Patty's day. There is a very large number of peoples who celebrate St. Patty's day in Seal Beach. They closed off one of the streets and the Police set up an emergency command post down there with a paddy wagon all ready for the drunk & disorderlies. Lion's club also set up down there offering free rides home. We walked down there and had a corned beef sandwhich at Hennesy's. It was good, but extremely loud. I had a Gennis; Rob has been assigned a 4 day trip that starts this eve so he was not able to drink. It was funny, because we got into the restaurant at about 12:30 and they informed us that they were going to remove all the tables at 1:00. And we watched them take several of the tables and the chairs out. It would be standing room only until closing.
After lunch we walked toward home and stopped in a a frozen yogurt shop. It is a serve yourself with abut 20 yummy flavors and all kids of fun things you can sprinkle on it. Then you pay by the weight. I got peach and mango and sprinkled on Heath bar bits and butter finger bits. It was sooooooooo good. Then we walked home and Rob had to leave on his trip. He flies to Portland tonight, then tomorrow he flies to Maui where he has a 48 hour lay over. Poor boy! On Sat he flies to Oakland and spends the night, and then he will be home early afternoon on Sunday.
I had a really nice lunch and reunion with two of my cousins, Judy and Peggy. They are the daughters of my Dad's sister Emily. We met in Seal Beach at a fun little restaurant on the beach. Afterward we wandered around Seal Beach and they shopped. Then we walked up to the frozen yogurt shope and indulged. Two days in a row. Definately not good for my diet.
It was a really nice visit. It has been a really long time since I have seen them and since they each live near I am hoping we can get together more.
I have started my very small scale gardening. Mom had given me some cute pots with herb seeds and I planted the seeds in some and put flowers in the others. Then I bought some peppers, red, orange, yellow and green and planted them in a planter box. I also got basil and celantro and put them in a planter. I had purchased two double- hooked shepards hooks and 4 hanging pots to hang on them. unfortunately they wouldn't hold the pots up. So, I took the hooks back and just put the pots on the ground. I had also purchased two tomatoe plants earlier. One is a nice big plant of Early Girls, and the other is a patio tomato. They are both doing well and the Early Girl has several tomatoes already.

February Fralicks

February started out with us heading to Fresno. My Dad had his knee replaced on the 3rd so we wanted to support him and help Barbara. He faired quite well through the surgery and has amazing range of motion immediately after. We watched the Super Bowl with them and were very pleased that the Saints won. Poor New Orleans needs some good events to head their way. We returned to Seal Beach on Monday the 8th.
On the following Thursday Rob and I went to a counseling meeting for my State Teacher Retirement. We found out that I can start collecting my retirement next month and that there is no advantage to waiting until I am 60. The difference between 55 & 60 is minimal, but when you factor in all the money I would be missing over that 5 years, it makes more sence to start collecting at 55. So that is what I shall do.
The following weekend we spent the day in Holywood. I had never seen the famous sign for real so we went. We visited Union Station, had lunch in a poo boy place that Brad recommended and then wandered through Olivera street which I could remember going to as a young child with my Mother. Olivera is a section that is like being in Mexico with all the markets and food booths. It was fun. Then we went to Griffith Park. We went through the Planetarian which was very facinating and then went for a long hike through the hills of the park. Very good for trying to get skinny.
The following day we biked along the beach to NewPort and back. 35 miles round trip. Very fun, except we always start to late and then it is freezing coming back.
The following week Rob studied for his upcoming training and I attended a 2-day workshop for my Personal Trainer stuff. It was great. It helped me out considerably, explained things I was unsure of and gave me a much better focus.
The following week I got my CPR and Defibulator certification and signed up to take my Personal Trainer exam.
On Thursday we got together with our wonderful friends Don and Tina whom we met on our bicycle trip through Italy two years ago. They live in Wisconsin but their son lives in San Diego so they were out visiting. We met for lunch in Seal Beach and then came back here and Bar-B-Qued. It was wonderful seeing them.
The following week Rob went off to Seattle to pass through his annual training with flying colors.
