Happy Armed Forces Day. It is raining here in Monterey. Bella and I got our morning walk-about in just as it was starting.
Today we have a plan. I just hope the rain doesn't interfere with it. Last week we followed the trail of the Movie Sideways. Today, and whenever possible along our journey, we will be following trails or routes or drives from Reader's Digest "The Most Scenic Drives in America". Today's drive is # 17; Big Sur Coast. Monterey to San Louis Obispo. But, since we have already been to SLO and Morrow Bay we will probably stop at Cambria.
Wow! what an amazing day. It was long, 12 hours from door back to door, but amazing. Weather was perfect. It was sunny and warm. The sunshine always makes the ocean so much prettier.
We left about 10 am (after coffee, Facebook, etc.) and there was some sort of accident on Hwy 1 and part of it was closed so we had to detour through part of Carmel. that took awhile, but we got back on 1 and down to the beautiful ocean.
Our first stop was just south of Point Lobos where we pulled over for a photo Op. It is so pretty and the water was a beautiful color. By the way, you can click on these pictures as you go along and they will be full size for you.
Rocky Point Restaurant was next. It is right on the ocean with some nice hiking trails out to the point. The restaurant has been under new management for about 2 years and they have apparently done amazing improvements. It doesn't open until 11:30 so we had about 30 min to hike around before going in for lunch. As we hiked around there was a hawk sitting up on a branch. It was eyeing Bella and all the rest of us actually. It stayed there the entire time, even through our lunch.
I actually didn't thin the food was great, but you couldn't beat the view
We continued on down the Coast through Big Sur. So Pretty. We were going to stop in at Garrapata State Park, but garrapata means "tick" in Spanish and apparently the park is full of them. We decided to pass
As we continued down the Coast of Big Sur we came to two beautiful bridges that we had to stop and take pictures of. The second is the famed Bixby Bridge that is featured in many coastal movies. They are both very impressive and the scenery around them is breath taking.

Prior to the Bixby Bridge is Point Sur Historic Park and the famed light house. Its powerful beam can be seen for more than 20 miles and has warned sailors away from the treacherous point for over a century.
Next came the famed Bixby Bridge.
Our next stop was Pfeiffer Big Sir State Park. Here we decided it was time to get out of the car and go for a little hike. We hiked for about 1 mile and then came to the split. We did the Pfeiffer Falls first,
And then back tracked and hiked to the Valley lookout. Round trip was only about 3 miles, but it was a good workout. We were able to take Bella with us on the trail, but that was a bit nerve-racking because there is Poison Oak everywhere and often the trail was very narrow. We will see in a couple days if we were successful in keeping her out or not.
Next we stopped just past Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. The sign said the parking lot was full to go into the park so we drove on and then pulled over. There is an Overlook Trail that Rob wanted to do. It looks down on McWay Cove, where a creek finishes its short journey with a fine flourish - an 80 foot waterfall tumbling down at the seaside. We hiked along a fire road, but were not able to see it. Oh well, next time.
We continued down the coast

Stopping in to take beautiful pictures
Along the way. It is such an amazing

Coastline. With beautiful
Beaches, amazing cliffs

And some incredible house nestled in.
We had originally wanted to take a tour of Hearst Castle, but when we got down there it was already 4:00 and we were getting tired. Rob and I had gone and toured the grounds many years ago while doing an Army Guard stint at Camp Roberts, so we were ok with passing on it this time. W

We did stop in and see the thousands of Sea Lions sun bathing on the beach tho. The males were fighting
Sorry, I don't think these videos are working and I can't seem to remove them.
Anyway, now we are getting really hungry, so after driving through San Simeon we went on to Cambria.
There we found a really cute little restaurant by a creek. It was called Robbins Restaurant. We both had really good food. Rob had his favorite Green Flash IPA, and I had some yummy local wine. After dinner we walked around the neighborhood. It was really cute.
After this we drove Hwy 46 to 101 and drove the 2 hours back to Monterey to our little home on wheels. We got there about 10 pm and went straight to bed. Great, Beautiful day!!!
