It was another pretty morning here at Henry's Lake. A storm is supposed to move in later this afternoon. It is a bit chillier this morning so we didn't get to sit outside.
It is opening day for the 2016-17 NFL season and the Raider's are playing New Orleans Saints. We went to Pond's Lodge to watch the game. It started out well, then turned tragic (but typical for the Raiders) and then Miraculously, in the last seconds, the Raiders caught up, then got behind, then scored another touchdown bringing them one point behind. Instead of kicking through the uprights for the extra point which would tie the game they went for the 2 point conversion where they have to run or pass the ball into the in zone. Are you kidding me???? Oh My God, THEY MADE IT! It took two years off our lives watching that! Then we still had 40 seconds to go and the Saints took the ball down within Field Goal range to win the game.......But........We held them off and
Rah, Rah, Rah, THE RAIDERS WON THE GAME!!!
Moving on to more family history!
Mom had told us the Uncle Sam Trude had been a Superintendent on the RailRoad Ranch in what is now Harriman State Park.
The Ranch is now a Historical Site that you can visit and go into some of the buildings, and then there are a bunch of hike trails through the property as well. So, we went to visit.
The first trail was John Muir Trail.
John Muir and Harriman were really good friends and together they got the property turned into a State Park. The John Muir Trail is an Interpretive Trail with Plaques along the way giving information. One of the plaques has an insert of John Muir's diary and sketch book.
We continued on the trails to the Rail Road Ranch and enjoyed some beautiful views along the way.
Is this an Alligator????
The trail followed the Henry's Fork of the Snake River.
When we got to the Ranch we chatted with a Ranger there. She knew Uncle Sam's name and said there was a plaque about him in the Superintendents' cabin, but unfortunately it is a rental cabin and we were not able to go inside. We did, however, go inside the dinning cabin and the Harriman Home.
We wandered through the rest of the ranch taking pictures
We continued on the trail of Harriman State Park with more pretty views
All together we hiked 5 miles. Thew wind really came up and the storm clouds were moving in.
From here we drove over to the fenced off, Private Property No Trespassing, posted property of the McCrea Ranch. We parked along the fence and stepped onto the property and started walking on. Immediately, a man came out and whistled at us and yelled at us that it was private property with no trespassing. I yelled back it had belonged to my Great Aunt and I wanted to take pictures. He yelled back, "What am I supposed to do with that?" I said " I don't know" I kept going and he went back into his house. Rob was afraid he was going to call the Police so he went over to talk to the man. I kept going to take pictures. I would have loved to have spent more time there, but I was also afraid he was going to call the Police and was afraid I was going to be arrested., so I quickly roamed a small area and took the following pictures.
I am assuming this was the main house. The reservoir side of it is collapsing. I would have liked to have gotten closer and gone around to the other side of it, but I was nervous about being there.
When I came back under the fence Rob was standing on the Man's porch talking with him.
The man thanked me for coming off the property. Rob had explained to him my situation and relation to the property and the man was nice but said there had been vandals on the property and he was watching out for it.
He also told Rob that we had just missed the owner who had just been there taking a trailer off the property. Damn. That would have been awesome to have met him and been able to talk to him about the current history and plans. Too bad!
From the property, since the weather was starting to get nasty, we decided to go to the Lakeside Lodge for dinner. We had some really good Ribs and they were out of mashed potatoes so they made us stuffed potato skins. Yummmmmm! We had a beer and watched a little more football before heading back to the Rig.
The weather is really supposed to turn nasty for the next several days which would keep us inside, so we decided we are going to leave tomorrow and head on down to Star Valley, WY where many of our friends are still there summering.
When we got back to the rig the wind was horrific. We were actually a bit concerned about the awnings that are over all the slides. They were rippling and the slides were bouncing and it was horrible. We finally decided to pull all the slides in except the bed and we crawled in bed and read before going to sleep. The wind was horrible all night long, but it was much better with the slides in. I'm afraid it would have ripped those awnings.
