Boy; this has been quite a week; We started moving on Thursday, 24 Sept. Our friend Blooms was there to help and I hired 2 local guys to help us as well. Rob and Bloomie went to Reno to pick up the 8’ x 16’ truck and we started to load. It was about 11 am when we actually started packing it. I am a master packer, so it was pretty tight.
About 1:30 the truck was full. It was, for the most part, all boxes, plus the king size top mattress. We went to Reno and unloaded the truck then went to In- N- Out burger and had lunch. From there, back to the house and loaded it up again. We got all the Reno stuff, including all the furniture loaded and headed back down to Reno. Everything fit nicely into the 10’ x 20’ storage unit. Of course you can’t get in it to get anything, but that storage is for all the stuff we don’t need to get to until we are back into a fixed house.
Needless to say, we were pretty exhausted. So, we ordered a couple of pizzas, broke out the brewskies and chilled for awhile. We were so exhausted that we all went to bed at about 8pm.
Friday, 25 Sept ’09 – Incline Village, NV. I woke up early so started at it. I still had a closet full of stuff in my Office, plus we had stuff downstairs that needed to go to LA. We packed and packed the truck. Bloomie helped us until about 1:00 and then we finally got him to go and enjoy Tahoe. Rob and I continued until dark to load the truck. We still had a bunch of piddly stuff to pack up. Again, we worked until dark, ate dinner and went to bed. The cleaning people are supposed to be here at 8:30 tomorrow morning.
Sat 26 Sept 09- Incline - I woke up about 5am and started working. Rob also got up early. We packed and packed and finally hit the road at about 10 am and headed to Fresno. The plan is to spend the night with Dad & Barb and visit with all of them and then hit the road early in the am. We also had stuff for them. Dad wanted our big screen TV, Mom wanted our vacuum, and Art wanted our extra booze and plants. We had a nice eve. Barb fixed ribs and Mom came over. We had a good dinner and chatted. Mom left about 9 pm and we all went to bed. The LA storage closes at 2pm on Sundays so we have to be on the road by 7am tomorrow.
Sun 26 Sept ’09 – Fresno, CA - We were up at about 5:30, dressed, bed made, etc. Dad got up early as well, so we visited with him, read the paper and drank coffee. He seems to be doing better all the time (had a little stroke in Aug) although his hearing is horrible. Barb got up so we got to visit with her as well. We ate cereal for breakfast and hit the road just after 7am. Oh, I am pulling the RV and Rob is driving the Beacon truck. Things went pretty well, Rob had to get gas and I didn’t need any so I pulled over in the dirt lot. I had to do a big U-turn to get back on the freeway. There were several large shallow holes that I had to go through. I looked over at Rob and he was freaking out. I thought “Oh Shit”…. When I went through one of the holes I hit the bikes that are in a rack on the back of the Seville. He thought I’d ripped them off, but they were ok. That threw a bit more tension into the day. Then we got to the grape vine and the truck started to really over heat. I was chugging up the hill at 15 mph and over heated to the point that I had to pull over and let the engine cool down. We sat for about 15 min until it cooled down, then started off again. It was slow, 15 – 25 mph but it didn’t overheat any more. We got to the storage facility at 1:00 we only had an hour to unpack. It was extremely frustrating. Instead of loading the truck with all the boxes and then put the racks in last so we could get them off first to set them up in the storage we loaded the racks with everything else and filled them up in the truck. Sooooo, we had to unload stuff just to get to the racks. It was agonizing. Also, there was a bunch of loose items that really needed to be boxed up. To make matters even worse, we had the cart loaded to go up the elevator to our storage but the elevator wouldn’t go. Apparently at closing time the elevators stop working. Our storage unit was wide open, we had stuff scattered in the aisle and we couldn’t get to any of it. Plus we had to take everything off the cart and put it back into the truck. Oh My! The Seville was parked on the street outside the storage facility. I waited for Rob to go park the Budget truck in the parking lot and come back to me at the Seville. When he got there we headed to Seal Beach to the Seabreeze RV Park on The Naval Weapons Station. We found our spot and got parked. Rob went in to open the Recliner’s slide to make sure we had clearance. He kept stopping so I went in to see what the problem was.
The spice cabinet had opened and tons of stuff had fallen out. Two of the crystal vases had shattered everywhere. Rob thought there was something stopping the slide so I crawled over the counter to see what it was. Sure enough, there were jars of spices, but worse of all, a bottle that was 2/3 full of molasses had opened and dumped all over the carpet and soaked in. Oh my God! Rob quickly hooked up the water and electricity. I started picking up all the spices and slid the slide open all the way. He got out the vacuum and vacuumed up all the glass. I started mopping up the molasses. It took me a couple hours, but I pretty much got it done. You can’t see it in the carpet anymore. We were exhausted! Luckily to exhausted to have any feelings about any of it. We ate left over pizza, had a cocktail and went to bed. We had to get up early the next morning to be at the storage facility at 6am when it opened.
Monday, 28 Sept ’09 – Seabreeze, Seal Beach, CA - We got up early fixed some coffee, got dressed and hit the road. It is about a 30 min drive from Seabreeze to LAX (the storage facility is right across the street from the B lot where Rob’s trailer is) we got there at about 7am. We started unloading the truck. By about 10 am we realized there wasn’t going to be enough room. We were filthy and very tired. Rob went to talk to the man about another unit. We secured another one, so now we have units 390 and 400. We needed more racks so we decided to go to Costco to get racks and go get some lunch. We got back at about 12:30 and put the racks together in the storage unit. We bought 4 5-shelf racks. We finally finished all the unloading and storing at 5pm. Oh my God, my feet and knees hurt soooo bad. We turned in the truck and headed for the Seville. I was going to go over to the parks shower for a shower but my feet hurt so bad I didn’t want to walk over there, so I took a nice hot shower in our new home. It felt good to be clean and have clean, soft clothes on. Rob went for a run. I couldn’t believe it. I said, “you still have energy and feeling in your lower limbs for a run?” He did so he went while I showered. It was so nice not to have a big mess to clean up or a bunch of stuff to find places for. I fixed some soup and we drank a bottle of Champagne to celebrate finally being done with our move. And conked out by 9pm.
Tuesday, 29 Sept ’09 – Seabreeze, CA When I go to bed at 8 or 9 pm I wake up at 5am. That’s how it was this morning. It is foggy and cool. I love our RV bed. It is super comfortable and I sleep really well. It is so nice not to have to jump up and go pack or load or unload anything. We just chilled this morning. Had coffee, caught up on our correspondence etc. I am going to create our website today. I already have the domain name for 15 years as well as the website hosting through Go Daddy so I called them to help me get started. I did start a little bit, but then decided to do it later. We went out to Camping world instead. We needed light bulbs for the hanging lights over the counter, we needed some bars to keep things from falling off the shelves and out of the cabinets, and some other stuff. Next we went to Home Depot. We needed dowels to prop up the shelf and rod in the closet (to many clothes) and stuff on the shelf, also, dowels to hold the bed up when we are trying to get into the storage under the bed.
While we were in Home Depot I got a phone call from our Real Estate agent up in Seattle. We received an offer on the Condo. She emailed it to us. So, we went home to complete our projects and check out the offer. It was lousy. We are listed at $135,000 and the offer is for $110,000. While I was dealing with the offer, Rob put all the projects into effect. We countered the offer and Rob had to go out to fax it up to the agent.
Rob and I went out to dinner. We went to Walt’s Warf. It is a really good seafood restaurant. We took with us a bottle of really nice bottle of Super Tuscan wine that we bought in Italy two years ago. We had it with our yummy Salmon. It was a really lovely dinner. We came home to watch a couple of the new season premiers, but they were lousy and we were to tired to watch. Went to bed early. I love the weather here.
