This hawk has a mouse in its claws, I watched it land.

I love biking, it was cold on the way back, but I always love riding.

Falmouth & Nantucket, MA

48°

Today was a fun day. We left our little house at about 8:15am. It was a chilly walk up to the truck. We headed to Hyannis port. We got fuel along the way so that we will be all ready for tomorrow.

We boarded the “Gray Lady”, the high speed ferry and departed at 9:20 for the 1 hour trip to Nantucket Island. It was a nice ride and we went by the Kennedy Compound so finally got to see where it was. Not like we were close enough to shore to see anything except where it is, but it was still cool.

We arrived at 10:20 ish and went right to the ticket office to purchase tickets for the island bus tour. I really like doing this type of tour because you get the lay of the land as well as the history. Anyway, the tour was at 11:30 so we wandered around Main Street for about an hour.

The tour was ok. Our guide, Pete, according to him, sounded like Lou Rawls. I thought he sounded more like Barry White. Anyway, he was informative and tried to be funny. He was cute. I think there just isn’t as much to tell about on Nantucket as there is for someplace like Boston, Concord, or Lexington. But it was fun.

The tour lasted about an hour. Afterward we found a nice little sandwich shop and had a couple really good sandwiches. This in itself was pretty amazing because today is the last day of the season and everyone was either out of stuff or trying to sell off the last of their stuff. They didn’t have a lot of stuff on their menus. Later in the day Rob went for an ice cream and ended up getting a medium portion for a small because they were trying to get rid of all the rest of it.

After lunch we walked over to the bike rental place. Rob wanted to rent bikes and go tour the rest of the island. I was already really cold and didn’t have any gloves so I begged off. He went off for a two hour ride, tour and picture taking excursion and I wandered around the shops.

I found this woman who had a weaving shop. She was selling shawls, throws, etc. She was just finishing up threading the loom. Another woman walked in just after me. The three of us chatted for about 30 min or so. The other visiting lady was a licensed social worker in Mass and the woman setting up the loom was a native of the island. She learned to weave as a child here on Nantucket, went off to school and got her teaching credential but couldn’t get a job. She was hired temporarily for one year and didn’t like it so she went back to the island and went back to weaving. I watched here finish her loom setup and the start of her project. It was fun.

Rob came back at 3:30. As it turned out we were able to get on the 4:30 ferry. We were on a standby list. We had some coffee to warm up, but then Rob got that ice cream which made him freezing again.

The ride back on the ferry was interesting because there were about 20 dogs of all shapes and sizes on board. It was a full ship. Some of the dogs didn’t like others near by, others barked or howled when the ship blew its horn. It was pretty fun.

Once back at Hyannis we walked down to the beach to the Kennedy Memorial. It is really nice, pretty and serene. In the same park is a Memorial to those lost in the Korean war. We took pictures of both then walked back to the port.

We had dinner at “Spankey’s Clam Shack”. Rob had a Caesars salad with tuna and I had a bowl of clam chowder and we split an order of Oysters Rockefeller. The oysters were terrible. The bar tender was going to buy us a drink for the bad oysters but we were on our way out. Oh well.

We went back to our little house (this time we got to drive all the way to our little house). We chilled for the rest of the night.

Tomorrow we will head to the Boston area stopping in at Plymouth. We will check out the Plymouth rock and they also have the Mayflower so you can check it out.

At any rate, Life is good and we are enjoying both our vacation and our new life.

More later, bye

We do a lot of chillin!

Just a note about time. Even on vacation one has to worry about time. What time does the ferry leave? What about the tour? When does the bike have to be back? Are we going to make it to the memorial before the sun goes down? Oh well, I guess you should not "worry" just be aware.
