Nothing was terribly exciting at the beginning of the month except for this amazing Sailing Ship that was in Long Beach and I have no recall as to why we were there to see it., but here it is.
Another fun thing is this Gro Gu. I always love Gro gu
Next crazy fun thing was that Rob had a trip to Maui on my Birthday and wouldn’t it be fun to go with him to celebrate in the sunshine.
So, I flew from Vegas to San Diego. I got a shuttle and went to his layover hotel, but i was not allowed to check in without him so I had to wait until 9 pm. I made the best of it. I had a drink at the bar overlookin the harbor and then had dinner.
When we finally did get to check into the room the TV was on and this was on the screen.
Rob had made reservations for dinner at one of the only operating restaurants in Lahaina after the horrific fires.. Our reservations were for 5 pm which would give us plenty of time to get there, check into the hotel and get changed.
Nothing ever goes as planned. It was windy in San Diego and they had changed the direction of take off. They could not take off with a full load of fuel and the amount of fuel they could take off with was not enough to make it all the way to Hawaii. So, we had to go to San Jose first, get fuel and then go on to Maui. Passengers were not happy about that. But, the alternative was bumping some of the passengers.
Needless to say, we got into Maui late and our reservations were cancelled. We did go down there, but we had to wait for an hour to be seated.
The fire was devastating. All along the way you could see burned out cars still sitting where they were burned and nothing left of homes but the concrete. It was so sad.
Flying out of Maui was as pretty as flying in. Such a beautiful place.

We got back to LAX late and stayed in the layover hotel. The next morning we flew back to Vegas to go home.
NOW THE REALLY SIGNIFICANT EVENT HAPPENING THIS MONTH IS THAT ROB IS RETIRING AND HIS LAST FLIGHT AS A PILOT EMPLOYED BY ALASKA AIRLINES IS FROM MAUI TO LAX ON MARCH 30TH.
We will get to that in a moment.
It was important to Rob as to me to be on board the plane for Rob’s last flight. And to make it even more special, we invited Marc and Teresa to be there as well.
The 4 of us flew to Maui on March 25th. Teresa and I went on line and found an awesome 2 bedroom condo on the beach in a wonderful resort in Kehei. The views were awesome, we looked over the pool and a beautiful lawn and the ocean off in the distance.
Rob and I played golf on the 26th. It would be his last time to play there and he had to pick up his clubs from the layover hotel where they have been stored for the past several years. The course was beautiful..

Unfortunately, again, I took more videos of the course than pictures and they don’t show up here.
Now, remember last month my hand was swollen and warm and red? Well, that all changed. Now it has sores and puss and is ugly.
Since we don't know what’s going on with it, but we do know that one round of antibiotics did nothing for it, i asked Rob if we could please go to a Dr. here in Maui. Since it happened in a marine environment (on our boat) i figured a dr. In a marine environment might have more of a clue.
The first thing she had me do was ice my finger so I could get my wedding ring off. Then she opened up one of the sores and got some puss to send off to the lab. She told me she thought it was Staph which is very contagious and can be very dangerous. She gave me an antibiotic shot, Doxicycline pills, and ointment, covered it and told me to stay out of the ocean and stay out of the sun. Hmmm in Hawaii, no ocean no sun.
The next day we went walking along the beach and checked out the turtles before Rob had to fly back to LAX. He has to start his last 3 day trip tomorrow.
On the 28th Marc Teresa and I went to the Aquarium. It was awesome. Super cool fish. They built their own reef to support the fish and turtles and everything they have there. It was a very cool place. We were supposed to go on a “behind the scenes” tour, but when we signed up on line we signed up for the wrong dates. Mine was a month off, but Marc and Teresa’s was for the next day. After wandering through we popped into the restaurant. We had a yummy meal and even yummier $5.00 Margaritas.
There was a shopping center nearby with an art gallery in it. Marc and Teresa knew the artist and had one of his paintings?! They chatted with him for quite sometime before we left.
Later that evening we went to the Palauea Resort in Waimea to see the exact view of a painting they have hanging in their living room. That was pretty fun.
We watched the sunset while sipping Mai Tai s. It is a beautiful resort and smells delicious.
On the 29th Rob flew back to Maui and I picked him up at the airport. We walked around town and had lunch. Marc and Teresa went back to the Aquarium for their tour, lunch again and more $5.00 Margaritas.
That night the 4 of us plus Shelly (Rob’s favorite first officer who we are all so glad is on his last flight) went out to dinner. It was great. Shelly is a sweet heart. She lives In Phoenix, AZ. She is married to a pilot who flies for American Airlines and they have two beautiful daughters. the very first time I met here was at her house where she invited us to join them for Easter dinner. Beautiful home, beautiful people, it was great to see her again. She has been telling everyone over the intercom on their flights over that past 3 days that Rob is retiring and this is his last flight.
While Rob was away Teresa and I planned for his last flight. We found some Post-it notes shaped like Hawaiian shirts and we have been writing on them his flight # OGG- LAX, last flight; Happy retirement etc .

Shelly also came with decoration for his retirement. Marc, Teresa and I got to the airport early and we started handing out the post-its to all the passengers in the boarding area who were going to be on his flight. We told them they could wear them, stick them anywhere on the airplane or hand them to the flight attendants when they boarded the plane. Everyone was super supportive. A couple with 3 daughters even volunteered to put the decorations that Shelly brought together so that Marc, Teresa and I could board early to take pictures in the cockpit.
While Teresa and I were working the crowd in the gate waiting area Shelly and Rob were down at the aircraft doing their inspections and taking pictures.
When the passengers boarded all the kids were carrying signs; “happy retirement”, “no more 9 to 5”, “the fun begins now”. It was awesome.
The other cool thing was that Marc, Teresa, and I were all able to ride in First class. Teresa and I sat together and Marc sat up and across with a nice gal.
Several times during the flight Rob popped out to wave at us. What are they going to do, fire him??!!
Im so proud of him and happy for him.
We got in late and Rob dropped Marc and Teresa off at their truck and they went and spent the night on their boat. Rob and I went to our boat.
The next day, which unfortunately was Easter Sunday, we had a retirement party for Rob on our boat. We had an awesome group of friends, but several of the invitees were unable to attend due to annual family commitments for Easter Sunday. We ordered food from PF Chang’s and it was an awesome day.
The next day, March 31st the 4 of us drove back to Pahrump and picked up our dogs from Marlena who had been taking very good care of them and spoiling them rotten while we were gone.
